For Theodore Waddell, design was never a matter of rigid rules or aesthetic formulas. He approached his work as an open-ended process, avoiding the trap of repetition in favor of a constant search for the unexplored. His method was defined by a desire to find new connections between ordinary things, allowing the project to emerge from an epiphany rather than a pre-set mold.
The design philosophy

A DESIGN PHILOSOPHY CONTAINS THE RISK OF FALLING INTO AN AESTHETIC PATTERN. RATHER THAN FITTING DESIGNS TO A PHILOSOPHY, CURIOSITY HAS DRIVEN ME TO LOOK FOR WHAT HAS NOT YET BEEN DONE. I LEAVE THE WINDOWS AND THE DOORS OF MY MIND OPEN, AND SOMETIMES AN EPIPHANY VISITS.

Timelessness vs. Fashion
Waddell’s work occupies a unique space with American creativity meets Italian rigor. He was deeply suspicious of the transient nature of trends, believing that “fashion” imposes an expiration date on an object. Instead, he sought a perfect unity between form and idea. When these two elements are closely aligned, the object ceases to be merely contemporary and becomes timeless–capable of surviving decades without losing its relevance.
The Truthfulness of Industrial Design
Unlike the solitary nature of art or craftsmanship, which relies on the uniqueness of the individual piece, Waddell embraced the challenge of  industrial design: the creation of objects that must retain their soul even when. reproduced. His goal  was to create pieces that feel inevitable – objects so honest in their purpose that they seem totally natural, even. when seen thousands of times.
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN DIFFERS FROM AN ARTIST’S OR ARTISAN’S OUTPUT. THE CHALLENGE SHIFTS FROM CREATING A SINGLE PIECE OF GREAT ART. TO DESIGNING AN OBJECT WHOSE PERSONALITY AND TRUTHFULNESS OF DESIGN TO PURPOSE SEEMS TOTALLY NATURAL WHEN SEEN THOUSANDS OF TIMES.

A Heritage Reactivated:
Participation Designs
Today, this fifty-year legacy – spanning from 1955 to 2006 – is reborn through Participation Designs. Founded by Theodore’s son, Brewster, and his wife Deanna, the company is not merely a manufacturing project, but a cultural one. Its mission is to preserve and “reactivate” these designs, engaging in a conscious dialogue between the past and the contemporary world.
The collection launches with the “Light Stick” family – designs that were orginally ahead of their time, now fully realized thanks to modern technology. Whether it is the Cylinder, Bowl or Bar light, or the architectural furniture pieces, every object is produced entirely in Italy. By collaborating with highly specialized artisans, Participation Designs ensures that materials like marble, wood, and metal are allowed to express their true physical geometric nature.
The Art of Participation
The name of the brand reflects its deepest core value: interaction. These are not static sculptures to be passively observed, but functional elements that invite a relationship with the user. Whether physically manipulating a light source or engaging with the balance of a table, the user completes the design.
Faithful to their origins, yet updated for today, these objects reaffirm Waddell’s vision: design that is essential, surprising, and designed to endure.
